Battlestar Galactica’s fugitives, on the other hand, have nowhere to go, and staying still is a death sentence. Star Wars’ rebels can, at least, lay down their arms and hide amongst the subjugated populace. Sure, both shows have their stars, but there’s no Luke Skywalker, no Force, no Yavin IV, nothing other than the vague scrap of a prophecy. When the Twelve Colonies are annihilated, mankind is forced to take to the stars, with the Cylons nipping at their heels. Instead, it’s the sense of loneliness and desperation that pervades both shows. But the more I played, the more I saw the parallels, and when the 2004 Galactica reboot came along, I started ploughing hour after hour into Homeworld 2.īecause as impressive as they were at the time, it wasn’t the ships or the space battles that made Battlestar Galactica (either the original or the reboot) appeal to me. When I first got into Homeworld, I was blissfully unaware that this space-based RTS had been influenced by the original pre-reboot Battlestar Galactica. Details include a removable bay door capable of displaying the Destroyer and authentic sounds from the game. But I’m more than happy for them to recycle chunks of plot as long as Homeworld 3 has the same big Battlestar Galactica energy as its predecessors. The Mothership, Khar-Kushan This lovingly crafted 14 (35.6cm) model features USB-powered LEDs illuminating the ship’s engines, ports, and launch bays. After Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm (re-released as Emergence), and Homeworld 2, they’ve got to come up with a fourth way for the Hiigarans to be exiled to the stars. It's also a goodbye to the planetary frame of reference it was constructed in Kharak orbit.I don’t envy whoever’s writing the story of Homeworld 3. Homeworld has always had a nice intermingling of scientific and emotional/spiritual themes, and the Mothership aligning with the galaxy at the beginning of its journey underlines how the Kushan civilization, in one hyperdrive test, is expanding to the galactic scale. What about a civilization capable of traveling across the galaxy? At our current level of technology, our frame of reference when we imagine our Solar System has it nice and aligned horizontally like a table. Now, we once again must chart a new course. We've come a long way from the scraps we lived off of, and got into, on Kharak. The orbital plane of a star system's planets are pretty arbitrary compared to the galactic plane of the galaxies they inhabit (our own Solar System's "North Pole" is happens to be pointing in the direction that the Sun is moving in its galactic orbit), but we don't think of this as much. Homeworld 3 Mothership Clip Homeworld on Twitter: 'It's hard not admire the craftsmanship and the research required to construct the Motherships. The Scaffold would naturally be equipped with the stationkeeping and attitude adjustment thrusters to do this. It might seem funny to us living on a planet all our lives to expend all that effort to turn and align a massive, multi-kilometer object, but again, it's in space, where this kind of thing is trivial. 1 Blackbird Interactive and Gearbox confirmed that Homeworld 3 would revolve around the adventures of a new mothership, the Khar-Kushan. The flagship also flips horizonal and vertical. Their journey is through the galaxy, after all. Khar-Kushan is the flagship where Imogen S'jet will take control of the Hiigaran fleet in Homeworld 3. The Mothership is calibrating its navigational references and it is much simpler to boot it all up when aligned with the galactic plane, eliminating any complex geometrical conversions in navigation. It's even more important BECAUSE it's in space, where everything is relative.
